Description

27" (68 cm). Standing upon a wooden platform base with decorative paper lithography is a paper mache jester with blue glass inset eyes, painted lashes and brows, upturned large nose and closed mouth with wide beaming smile and row of teeth. A metal rod arising from the platform goes through the body and head of the jester and balances a small bisque doll upon the head of the jester, the bisque doll with glass eyes, closed mouth, and holding an acrobat's balancing rod in its hands. When handle at side of base is turned, music plays, the jester strums the mandolin that he holds and appears to be balancing the twirling little doll that is posed atop the jester's cap. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: attributed to Zinner and Sohne, circa 1890. Value Points: original costumes and fine painting are well preserved on the rare early toy with amusing multiple actions.
