Description

Each 6 1/2" diameter (16 cm). Each is of firm sided paper mache with gesso and gilt paper banding, gold leaf rims. The reverse of the glass lid features hand painted scenes of aristocratic ladies; in one scene a young man is proposing; in the other the woman, wearing a crown and ermine- bodice is being served from a basket of fruit by a young page,a dog at her side. Presented originally as deluxe candy boxes by Paris shops that catered to a royal trade, the precious boxes were later saved. French, Epoque Napoleon III. Excellent condition, one with slight gilt wear at sides.
