Lady on Shoe-Shaped Log as Candy Box

Description

13"l (33 cm). A paper mache log with faux-bark finish enhanced with wood knots and floral and moss trim is shaped to appear as a carved wooden shoe, with bisque head of early poupee protruding from the toe, the head with cobalt blue glass enamel inset eyes, painted eyeliner and lashes, brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with center accent line, pierced ears, blonde mohair wig. The log is hollow for use as candy box, and has a paper mache lid that is silk draped to appear as if it was the lady's gown; the lady's bisque arm rests upon the lid. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 4 B (shoulderplate) (remains of paper label on underside of lid). Comments: circa 1870. Value Points: the luxury boite de bon-bons with outstanding detail and creativity, made for luxury French confiserie is enhanced by inclusion of early Barrois bisque head.
