Description
20"l (51 cm). Of superb finest woods and featuring inlay designs and bronze mounts, the Empire styled day bed hides its original purpose as a candy box: hidden below the headboard and the footboard are drawers that once held luscious bon-bons. The bed is fitted with yellow silk tufted cover and tasseled pillows, and the drawer's contents indicate that it was later used as a treasure box for sewing notion. Although bearing no maker's mark, the luxurious woods and bronzes, the maitrise quality workmanship and the large size indicate its production for a confiserie that catered to the royal trade. Very fine original condition. French, early 19th century.
