16" x 10" (40 x 25 cm). A lightwood-framed box is richly covered with decorative papers, its shaped top centered by a glass-covered engraving of nature scene. When opened, the box reveals an elaborately fitted interior with rich gold leaf edging on each box. The inside lid supports a gilt edged mirror that can hinge open in easel fashion, and the box contains eight smaller lidded boxes, and three green velvet covered cushions; the pin cushions and mirror suggest a possible intention for use as jewelry box after the candy was gone; in actuality, the box appears never to have been used again. A hand-written script inside the center box indicates "M. Caffin gagne a la loterie" (Mr. Caffin won the candy box at a lottery). The outstanding luxury and the large size of the candy boxes illuminate its creation for a exclusive confiserie catering to the aristocracy. French, early 19th century. Very fine original condition.
