Description

18" (46 cm). Bisque socket head with rounded facial modeling depicting young child, pale bisque, pale blue glass inset eyes with prominent spiral threading, dark eyeliner, painted lashes and brows, accented nostrils and eye corners, open mouth with shaded lips, two rows of tiny teeth, blonde lambs wool wig over original pate, carton torso containing clockwork mechanism, kid-over-wooden hinged upper legs, composition lower arms and legs. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: Poupee,Au Magasin des Enfants, Passage de l'Opera (green stamp on torso). Comments: Bebe Gigoteur by Jules Steiner, when wound and lever released the bebe waves arms and legs, turns head, cries "Mama"; this example was made for and costumed by the prestigious Parisian doll store Au Magasin des Enfants, circa 1875. Value Points: rare store- signed bebe has unusually fine quality of bisque and detail of body, original wig, dress, undergarments, beautiful leather shoes with fragment of original label from Au Magasin des Enfants.
