20" (51 cm). One piece carved wooden head and torso with oval face having sculpted features, elongated throat, shaped bosom with painted nipples, the torso extends into upper legs with dowel jointing at mid-thighs and knees, dowel- jointing at shoulders and elbows, very shapely legs and arms, enamel inset eyes, squiline nose and eye corners, carved philtrum, painted lips, pierced ears, unique painting of eyebrows, ash brown wig in elaborate original coiffure. Condition: very good overall, some minor paint loss, but original finish is wonderfully preserved. Comments: Continental,mid-18th century, maker unknown. Value Points: superb and extremely rare early wooden doll of aristocratic presence with beautifully shaped body, and very fine original costume including stomacher and hair ornaments trimmed with delicate fly-fringe, stomacher, silk slippers, muslin hoop to support silk skirt with panniers, and perfectly fitting white gloves. Provenance: ex-collection of Marjorie Seibert, collection of Peggy Lancaster, featured by John Darcy Noble in his book, Rare and Lovely.
