28" (71 cm). Standing upon a velvet-covered base is a bisque portrait-faced gentleman with oval shaped portrait face, elongated throat, brown glass paperweight inset eyes, painted lashes, incised eyeliner, brush stroked and multi- feathered brows, accented nostrils, open mouth, outlined lips, brunette mohair wig over cork pate, carton moule torso containing mechanism and music, wire upper arms, paper mache hands. When wound, music plays and the shepherd turns his head from side to side, then nods his head and lifts his wooden flute to play, then repeats the actions, while music plays. Condition: generally excellent, functioning well, costume a bit dusty. Marks: 9 (and artist checkmarks on doll). Comments: Roullet et Decamps, the automaton appeared in their catalog, circa 1885, described as "Berger Watteau" costumed in rich satin. Value Points: rare automaton with character-like face, superb original silk costume.
