Description
23" (58 cm). Standing upon a velvet-covered
circular base is a bisque-headed doll with
portrait like features, pale blue enamel inset
eyes, painted lashes, dark eyeliner, arched
feathered brows, accented nostrils and eye
corners, closed mouth with shaded lips,
pierced
ears, blonde mohair wig over cork pate, carton
moule torso and legs, wire arms, pewter
hands.
When wound, the doll moves its head from
side to
side and nods, while fingers stroll the harp
strings in a realistic manner, music plays.
Comments: a similar automaton, on variation
of
base and costumed as gentleman of the
court,
appeared in the 1880 Roullet et Decamps
catalog
named "Pifferari". Value Points: rare early
automaton in fine large size has stunningly
beautiful portrait like face.
