Description

24" (61 cm). Standing upon a velvet-covered platform is a bisque-headed lady with portrait- like face, large brown glass paperweight inset eyes, dark eyeliner, painted lashes, brush stroked and multi-feathered brows, accented eye corners, shaded nostrils, closed mouth with center accent line, pierced ears, brunette human hair over cork pate, carton moule torso containing clockwork and musical mechanisms, wire upper arms, bisque forearms; a wicker basket decorated with flowers and moss and containing a tiny bisque doll hidden under the petals of a large rose, extends from the torso by metal rods. When wound, music plays, the lady turns her head from side to side, nods, and then lifts the lid of basket to reveal the "surprise", the little bisque doll that slowly rises from her hiding place. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: Depose Tete Jumeau 9 (and artist checkmarks, stamp on doll head). Comments: Roullet et Decamps, circa 1890, the automaton appeared in their catalog as "Bouquetiere Surprise". Value Points: rare automaton with exquisite portrait face and most appealing activity.
