Description

20" overall (51 cm). Standing upon a velvet-covered wooden base is a bisque portrait-faced lady with amber complexion, slender facial modeling, elongated throat, long painted lashes, brush stroked and feathered brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with richly shaped and accented lips, pierced ears, black mohair wig over cork pate, carton moule torso and legs, wire upper arms, amber bisque hands. When wound, the lady turns and nods her head, offers tea and then pours tea, music plays. Condition: generally excellent, costume a bit dusty, tea pot lid missing. Marks: (artist checkmarks on head). Comments: Leopold Lambert, circa 1890, the automaton appeared in the Lambert catalog as #39 named "Chinoise Verseuse" and described as having a "character face"; the head was especially modeled for this automaton by Jumeau and used only on this piece. Value Points: rare automaton with uniquely sculpted face, outstanding bisque and painting, original silk costume from Lambert workshops, original store label of Au Nain Bleu on base, functions perfectly.
