Description

20" (51 cm). Standing upon a velvet-covered base is a bisque-head doll with distinctive character face, large brown glass inset eyes, painted lashes, rose blushed eyeshadow, brush stroked and multi-feathered brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth modeled with wide beaming grin, painted tongue and teeth, shaded lips, pierced ears, auburn mohair wig, carton moule torso and legs, wire upper arms, bisque forearms. When wound, he turns his head from side to side, nods forward as though offering a croissant to a bystander, and then lifts the lid of a cake box in which is hidden a little paper mache kitten that pops up; music plays. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 203 (incised on head) Depose Tete Jumeau 4 (red stamp). L.B. (key). Comments: Leopold Lambert, with bisque character head sculpted by Jumeau especially for the Lambert series, circa 1892. Value Points: rare and wonderfully preserved automaton with perfectly functioning music and amusing action, original silk costume.
