Description
21" (53 cm). Paper mache solid domed head
attached to paper mache upper torso by means of
protruding torso dowel, delicately painted baby
hair, black enamel glass inset eyes, feathered
brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth, sculpted
ears, paper mache one piece lower torso and upper
legs, softly stuffed muslin midriff and upper
arms and legs, wooden lower arms and legs with
loosely-jointed paper mache hands and feet to
simulate the posture of infant baby. Condition:
generally excellent. Comments: Germany, circa
1860, the taufling baby was inspired by the
Japanese ichimatsu baby first exhibited at the
London Exhibition of 1855. Value Points: rare
doll in wonderful size with original painting,
all original body parts, original costume
includes straw bourrelet cap designed to protect
the head of young baby learning to walk.
