Description
Of silk/cotton with crisp finish that enhances
the two-tone sienna and cream checkered pattern,
the dress features a low rounded neckline criss-
crossed by a fringe-edged collar that terminates
in lappets that fall below the fitted waist. The
box-pleated sleevelets are also fringe-edged. The
waist is fitted with an invisible set-in band,
above tiny cartridge pleats. The entire dress is
lined with hook and eye closure at the back, and
appears as though never used. There is one small
fabric rent at the back. A complementary
elaborately woven straw bonnet has a wide wavy
brim trimmed with cherry silk ribbon edged with
black velvet. The same ribbon serves as banding
and forms two large bows on the outside and two
one the inside. There are ivory silk streamers.
There is some damage to the straw at the front
brim. Along with rose silk satin slippers with
hand-sewn edging, rose silk rosettes, soft tan
leather soles and heels typical of those signed
Huret, signed with shield mark enclosing an old
style letter T. The costume is appropriate for
14"_15" plump-bodied poupee of the 1860 era.
Circa 1860.
