Description
21" (53 cm). Of very thick hand-pressed porcelain with oval-shaped face and elongated throat and black sculpted hair in most unusual arrangement, having waved curls from center part drawn behind the ears, decorated with stippling above the ears, and combed into wide poufs at the crown and loosely coiled braids and rolls onto the shoulders. The doll has sculpted detail of eyelids enhanced by red and black upper eyeliner, shaded blue eyes with upper glancing pupils, accented nostrils and eye corners, closed mouth with center accent line suggesting a demure smile. The body is hand-stitched French kid leather with shapely torso and porcelain arms to above the elbows. The costume is a delicate blue patterned cotton gown and jacket with embroidered blouse, undergarments, stockings and shoes. The doll is incised _8_ on shoulder plate and red lettered _14_ inside. Circa 1870. From the Collection of Mildred Seeley.
