17" (45 cm). An elegant lady doll has pressed
bisque swivel head with kid-edged bisque shoulder
plate, pale blue glass enamel eyes with darker
blue outer rims, dark eyeliner, painted lashes,
feathered brows, accented nostrils and eye
corners, closed mouth with pale accented lips,
ears pierced into the head, original blonde
mohair wig with interwoven ribbons over cork
pate, kid fashion body with shapely waist and
derriere, slightly padded bosom, gusset-jointing
at elbows, hips and knees, stitched and separated
fingers. The doll wears her original gown of fine
silk/wool in delicate taupe color with pale blue
contrast trim, elaborately constructed bustle
back, undergarments, leather boots. The doll is
marked _4_ on head and shoulder plate. After
1870, size 4 at 45 cm became the classic doll
size, and numerous doll boutiques offered
costumes designed to fit that standard size. The
doll has a beautiful serene expression of great
natural elegance, enhanced by her original
costume. Circa 1870.
