Description
9" jar (23 cm). A heavy paper mache jar in
tan/brown colors is double-handled and has hinged
lid. When keywound and lever released, a little
bisque-headed girl pops up, blows kisses, turns
from side to side, and then pops back down into
the jar where she has been hiding. The doll has
bisque socket head, blue glass enamel inset eyes
with spiral threading, dark eyeliner,
brushstroked and feathered brows, accented
nostrils and eye corners, closed mouth modeled as
though open with smiling expression and double
row of painted teeth, blonde mohair wig over cork
pate, bisque forearms with nicely detailed
fingers and nails, white pique collar. Condition:
generally excellent, mechanism functions well,
right thumb tip broken. Marks: (artist's
checkmarks on head). Comments: circa 1895,
probably Roullet et Decamps. Value Points: rarely
found automaton with amusing action, rare bisque
head with closed mouth and painted double row of
teeth.
