Description
11" (28 cm). Fabric base head with painted
hair and facial features portraying adult man
with brown eyes and prominent moustache
and goatee has slender-shaped carton body
whose lower torso contains mechanism,
leather arms, brass feet with protruding
walking gears. Condition: generally excellent.
Marks: The Patent Autoperipatetikos Walking
Zouave, Martin & Runyon (and directions for
use, on box lid). Comments: Martin and
Runyon, New York, circa 1862, when wound
the soldier marches forward. The toy was
inspired by the Union volunteer militia of 1861
that had been patterned after the French
infantry regiment of Zouaves. Value Points: the
early patent toy is preserved with original
costume in its original box.
