Description
30" (76 cm). Pressed bisque swivel head on
kid-edged bisque shoulderplate with modeled
bosom and shoulderblades, brown glass
paperweight inset eyes with prominent spiral
threading, dark eyeliner encircles the eyecut,
painted lashes, incised eyeliner, brushstroked
and multi-feathered brows, accented eye
corners, shaded nostrils, closed mouth with
modeled space between the shaded and
outlined lips, pierced ears, blonde mohair wig
over cork pate, French kid bebe body with
scalloped edge collarette, kid over wooden
upper arms, bisque forearms with separately
sculpted fingers, defined knuckles and nails,
Chevrot patented leg hinge, wooden lower
legs, antique white cotton dress,
undergarments, bonnet, leather shoes
(additional maroon velvet dress included).
Condition: generally excellent. Marks: Bru Jne
12 (head) (Bru paper label on torso).
Comments: Leon Casimir Bru, circa 1885.
Value Points: an exceptional bebe from the
golden age of the Bru firm, in larger size, with
superb detail of sculpting and quality of
bisque. Included is a photograph of the doll
and her original owner Mabel Rose Eaton with
note "this is a photograph of Mabel Rose with
her greatly loved doll Marguerite. Mabel was
born in 1876 in San Gabriel and died in Los
Angeles in 1949...Marguerite was purchased
by our mother at the White House in San
Francisco." The doll later belonged to Lucy
Earle of Los Angeles.
