22" (56 cm). Bisque socket head with amber-brown complexion, large brown glass paperweight inset eyes with spiral threading, black painted lashes with "dot" highlights, black brushstroked and feathered brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with outlined coral-shaped lips, pierced ears, French brown composition fully jointed body. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: J. Steiner Bte SGDG Paris Fre A 15. Comments: Jules Steiner, circa 1889, the doll is in costume with original label of Paris toy store Au Nain Bleu, the costume representing the heroine, La Perichole, from the Offenbach opera of the same name; it is likely the costume was prepared for the Paris Exposition Universelle of Paris in 1889. Value Points: extraordinary beauty of the doll with expressive features enhanced by glowing luminous complexion, superb decoration, original body and body finish, wearing her perfectly preserved original costume of cream silk satin decoratived with features and gold passamenterie. The costume comprises dress, leggings, lined cape, and feathered coronet and she wears "diamond" ear studs and necklace; the costume has original label "Au Nain Bleu, Boul. des Capucines 27 Paris".
