Description
17" (43 cm). Wooden dancing doll known as
"pantin" has alternate faces and costumes
depicted on front and back, each face with
highly characterized features, prominent eyes,
well-detail painting, one with painted
moustache; the carved wooden top hat and
flat-dimensional body with loosely jointed
arms and legs is decorated differently on the
front and back, each with artistic and elaborate
decorations. When string at base is pulled the
doll "dances", waving arms and legs in
amusing fashion. Condition: generally
excellent. Comments: the dancing dolls or
"pantins" were made in both Germany and
France in the early 19th century. Value Points:
large size, remarkable detail of faces, artistic
costume detail of the perfectly preserved
figure.
