Description
22" (56 cm). Hand-modeled paper mache shoulderhead of young child with black complexion, black sculpted fleecy hair, brown glass inset eyes in upper glancing expression, black tinted brows and eyeshadow, closed mouth with downcast lips, modeled tears below each eye, black cloth softly-stuffed baby body, black composition lower arms and legs, antique costume. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: L.M. (incised on back shoulderplate) Peggy 1908 (hand-lettered label on torso). Comments: attributed to Leo Moss, the legendary doll maker of Macon, Georgia; the itinerant day laborer is said to have created one-of-a-kind dolls from end-of-day wallpaper scraps and other "found" objects; the artist was featured in an exhibit at the Macon Historical Society. Value Points: very rare doll with distinctively hand-modeled mournful features, uniquely modeled tears.
