Description
12" (30 cm). The pair of bisque dolls comprises
an attached man and woman arranged in waltzing
pose, the woman's gown disguising a tin-plate
cylinder which contains a clockwork mechanism and
which when wound, causes the couple to glide and
then twirl around on the three tiny wheels hidden
below the cylinder. She has bisque swivel head on
bisque shoulderplate, elegant shaping of slender
face, blue enamel eyes, painted lashes, brows and
closed mouth, white mohair wig, bisque arms to
above the elbow; he has bisque head with flat cut
neck socket, blue glass eyes, painted lashes,
brows and closed mouth, blonde mohair wig, metal
hands, wire upper arms and legs; the dolls are
costumed as Marquis and Marquise. CONDITION:
Generally excellent, restoration to lady's right
hand. MARKS: G. Vichy (brass plate on underside).
COMMENTS: Gustav Vichy, circa 1875. VALUE POINTS:
Exquisitely detailed automata, the woman's arms
uniquely sculpted for the dance pose, mechanism
and music function well; original music label on
underside.
