Description
23" (58 cm.) All cloth doll of light brown cambric cotton, uniquely shaped face with wide cheek and chin bones, stitch-shaped nose, applique fabric eye whites with black embroidered lashes and black button bead eyes, stitched mouth of light tan cotton in wide beaming smile, black yarn hair, stitch-jointing at shoulders, hips and knees, defined fingers, separated thumbs. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: the earliest period work of American artist Dewees Cochran, 1934, she presented the doll as "Mammy"; few examples of the doll were made and as each was made completely by her, each example varies. Value Points: remarkably-preserved doll, notable not only for its rarity and choice condition, but also for its imaginative artistry, the doll is wearing its original artist-made costume of blouse, skirt, petticoat, pantalets, apron, hankie and bandana.
