Description
21" (53 cm) overall. Seated upon a velvet and
paper covered wooden base which contains a
mechanical clockwork is an old woman with paper
mache head having highly defined character
features, painted brown eyes, mohair brows,
black upper eyeliner, sharply pointed nose, wide
smiling mouth, carton torso and lower legs, wire
upper arms and legs, bisque forearms. When wound,
the woman vigorously begins to knit, twisting her
arms to and fro, tapping her foot. CONDITION:
Generally excellent, mechanism functions well.
COMMENTS: Circa 1890, similar mechanical dolls
were shown in the Ernst Holzweissig catalog of
1898. VALUE POINTS: Wonderfully preserved
mechanical toy with original facial painting,
wig, costume.
