Description
21" x 18" closed. A wooden box, designed as
though it were a carnival stall, has sloped roof
and hinged front that double-folds open to fitted
arcade interior. At the center stands a bisque-
headed man with painted hair; the pinball works
and allows the player to "win" a prize from among
the 39 miniature toys, dolls and novelties that
are arranged on the back walls. To the left is
arranged a revolving wheel with center doll that
directs the roulette activity; there are an
additional nine prizes that could be won at this
point. At the right is a wooden pin arrangement
with tossing metal ball, and on the doors are
arranged wooden number sticks and 18 additional
prizes. The doors and back of stall are
labelled "Les Jeux Forains" (_the carnival
games_). The toy is extremely rare to find in any
condition; this example is preserved in pristine
unplayed with condition. French, circa 1885.
