27" L. A wooden box with steepled roof has sliding lid that, when removed, reveals the fitted interior, comprising various animals cages with paper mache animals. The menagerie has lithographed paper in the style of so-called Biedermeier furniture with elaborate scrolls and garlands, and the names of each animal over its cage. There are ten separate cages and two open stalls for larger giraffes and elephants. Within each cage is the appropriate paper mache animals with flocked finish and painted details. An exceptional ensemble with original decorations and animals. Germany, circa 1870.
