Description
22" (56 cm.) h. x 15"w. x 7"d. arrangement. 17"h. angel. Arranged upon a gold-leaf painted wooden base is a sculpted form to depict ground cover, carved tree with sculpted buds and a glass-topped pond. Overlooking the scene is an angel with polychromed terra cotta head having sculpted windblown brown curly hair, enamel eyes, parted lips, tow-wrapped armature body, carved wooden lower arms and legs to above the knees, painted sandals on bare feet, antique gold satin gown with metallic thread trim, and with (detachable) carved and painted wooden wings. Seated and looking up at the angel in a beseeching manner is a young lad with polychromed terra head, enamel eyes, painted features, tow-wrapped body, carved wooden limbs, original peasant costume. Further adorning the scene are two carved wooden fantasy sea animals perched alongside the pond. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Neapolitan, attributed to Nicola Ingaldo, mid/late 1700s, whose specialty was the creation of carved wing angels, and whose works were recorded in the inventory of Ferdinand II of the Two Sicilies. Value Points: outstanding Neopolitan vignette highlighted by carved wing angel is remarkably preserved.
