Description
Including a 14"h. stays for lady, of two parts with lacing at one side and hooks at the other, heavily boned with baleen whale bones, and of densely-patterned woven silk. And fitted cap whose silk is covered with thickly embroidered metallic gilt, trimmed with a border of lace and having gilt tassels at the crown, with stiff buckram lining. The stays and bonnet are preserved in an early box along with an early hand-written invoice from 1704 detailing fabrics and trims purchased for Lady Child of Wanstead House of Essex, and which include materials likely used in the construction of these two articles. English, early 1700s.
