Description
12" (30 cm.) x 13" x 7"d. Inside a wooden-framed shadow-box with original decorative paper covers, gilded frame and early glass cover is an extraordinarily imaginative scene comprised of infinite details featuring a child asleep in a tree and flower-laden bower amidst a forest which is fronted by a little pond with glass waterfall. Also appearing in the scene are an aristocratic wax man and woman, who while strolling in the forest, appear to have just come upon the child and look on in wonder. The forest is filled with dozens of fancily painted paper mache or wooden birds, butterflies and little animals that appear to be protecting the child. Condition: excellent. Comments: early 1800s, an early allegorical scene whose specific storyline is a mystery. Value Points: the mystery of the well-preserved scene is enhanced by its exceptional artistic detail.
