19" (48 cm.) 24"h. with base. Each is carved wood with gofun-finish and painted facial features including moustache details, carved wooden hands posed to clasp reigns and feet with attached intricate booting, wearing very elaborate uniforms, armor and helmets, with attached weaponry, and seated upon carved horses with fitted saddle and decorations, glass eyes and black silk mane and tail, each on original wooden ebony black base. Condition: excellent. Marks: Japanese, the pair depict the warriors Takatsuna, who is riding the white horse named Ikezuki, and Kagesue riding the black mount, in the famous scene of the two warriors racing to be the first to cross the Uji river and engage the enemy forces, mid-1800s, Edo Period. Value Points: the exceptional detail of the storied pair ranges from facial expression to sculpted detail of costume.
