Description
13" (33 cm.) seated. 15" x 12" cushion. The dairi-bini (imperial couple) each has carved wooden head with fine gofun finish, enamel eyes, painted facial features including okymayu skybrows indicating royal status, black silk hair in arranged elaborate coiffure, wooden hands and each wearing a multi-layered costume of rich brocades with symbolic details, she holding a hand-painted folding fan, each seated upon a matching silk cushion which is centered on a wooden platform and each is preserved in its original labeled box. Condition: excellent, fabrics are superbly preserved except wear to her back outer cover. Marks: (see photographs). Comments: Meiji Era, late 1800s, from Kyoto atelier of Hashimoto-ya (Hashimoto Kichibee), whose studio was located at Shijo-dori no Banba Higashi-iru in Kyoto. Value Points: superb workmanship, fine state of preservation and rare original documentation of maker.
