15" (38 cm.) Each has bisque socket head with uniquely sculpted and very distinctive mischievous expression, small blue or brown glass flirty eyes, very thick brown or black "comma" shaped brows with sculpting detail, laughter crinkles around the eyes, upturned rounded nose with accented nostrils, beaming smile on closed mouth, accented lips, impressed dimples, red or black mohair wig, uniquely sculpted body with jointing at shoulders, elbows, hips and knees, pointing fingers, sculpted stockings and black or brown shoes with upturned toes, wonderful antique costume that may be original. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: K*R Simon & Halbig 124 (on Moritz) 123 (on Max). Comments: Kammer and Reinhardt, circa 1913, the pair, Max and Moritz, were inspired by the lead characters and the uniquely modeled urchins were sculpted for the doll firm to represent the popular characters Max and Moritz, from the book of the same title originally created by the German author Wilhelm Busch in the mid-19th century, and later immortalized in German film and for the American market in the comic strip "The Katzenjammer Kids". Value Points: among the rarest of the German character series, the pair have distinctive sculpting, superb bisque, and original unique bodies that were used for these models only; the dolls are especially rare to find still united as a pair.
