Description
17 1/2" (44 cm.) Felt swivel head with pressed and painted facial features, brown painted eyes gazing sharply to the side, dark eye shadow, painted upper eyeliner and lashes, fringed brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth, brunette wig, hollow felt torso, felt arms and legs, jointing at shoulders and hips. Wearing red felt tank top, tan, felt shorts, black tam, leather laced boots, and with large padded boxing gloves. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: Lenci Di E. Scavine Made in Italy 1005...(rectangular paper label). Comments: Lenci, 1929, the model was shown in the 1929 catalog identified only as "1000/5", from the firm's 1000 Sport Series which used the 300 facial model. Three years earlier, a Lenci doll wearing an identical boxing costume to this doll was named in the 1926 Lenci catalog as "Tunney", likely a reference to the US boxer, Jim (Gene) Tunney, who held US light heavyweight titles in 1922 and 1923, and held the world heavyweight title from 1926 to 1928. Although the costumes are identical, it is not known if the "1005 Boxer" was also intended to represent Tunney, or simply made use of existing designs.
