Description
17" (43 cm.) Paper mache head with enamel eyes, gofun complexion, highly-characterized features including pronounced ears, closed mouth, black bobbed hair, paper mache and muslin body. Condition: generally excellent, chip at upper torso, but otherwise unplayed with and virtually mint. Comments: Japanese, the traditional play doll known as Ichimatsu, circa 1928. The tradition of sending costumed dolls known as Friendship Dolls was initiated in 1927 with a series of 32" dolls representing various Japanese regions; this example follows that tradition in a smaller size. While the precise date is not known, it is certain that it precedes 1941 when the school names were changed. Value Points: The doll is presented in her original wooden box with Japanese lettering, along with four beautifully-made kimonos and with various other handmade blankets, shoes, and toys. A signed paper included with the box reads "Work done by children 7 to 12 years of age, pupils of Fujisawa Grammar School Fujisawa, Japan". The Japanese box lettering reads "Gift" and the name of the Fujisawa school which was founded in 1872.
