13" (33 cm.) Carved wooden shoulderhead of aristocratic woman with elaborately-sculpted hair arranged in formal curls, painted facial features, blue outlined eyes, single-stroke brows, closed mouth, deeply-modeled bosom, male sexed body, carved wooden lower arms and legs, painted black boots. Condition: generally excellent, some light rubs on complexion. Comments: French, late 1700s, from a series of carved wooden dolls representing aristocratic figures of the French court, designed to symbolically depict their many scandals; this particular example represented an unidentified hermaphrodite. Value Points: rare doll wears original low-cut gown, undergarments, black silk bonnet, and has voluminous black hooded cape allowing disguise.
