Description
20" (51 cm.) figures seated. Each has paper mache head with highly-characterized facial features of elderly man and woman, each with blue glass eyes, impressed laughter lines and crinkles, pronounced nose, he with closed grimacing mouth, and she with hinged jaw, carton torso and legs in seated pose, paper mache lower arms and wire upper arms. Each is seated, attached on rod, to wooden stool, and each is wearing original costume of villager, he with woolen jacket and plaid pants, watch and fob, sculpted brown shoes, holding a bottle of Emser Wasser, and she with costume and shawl, holding a purse as though she is selling him a cure. When each is wound, his eyes blink back and forth, and her mouth opens and closes, while they each nod as though in animated conversation. Meanwhile, the wooden table between them has a hidden music box which plays a fine tune when wound. Excellent condition, original painted finish and costume, very expressive features of the imaginative vignette. Germany, circa 1885.
