Description
11" (28 cm.) Standing upon a wooden platform with lithographed paper cover, spoked wheels and hidden mechanism is a bisque head doll with blue glass eyes, painted lashes, feathered brows, open mouth, tiny porcelain teeth, blonde hair, wooden block torso and lower arms, original costume and holding a tennis racquet in right hand and ball in the other. When the toy is pulled along, the little doll turns her head side to side, and lifts tennis racquet up and down as though playing tennis. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Germany, circa 1890, attributed to Zinner and Sohne, the toy is shown in German Doll Encyclopedia by Cieslik, page 125, in an article "Dolls and the Tennis Theme". Value Points: rare toy with unusual theme, well-functioning movement. Private Collection of Marianne Cieslik.
