Description
6" (15 cm.) Muslin doll with flat-dimensional face, padded wire armature posable body, painted complexion and facial features, dark eyes, single stroke brows, nostril dots, tiny closed mouth, auburn thread hair wig arranged with braided chignon at back of head. Condition: near mint. Comments: "Benigna", created by sewing circle of the Moravian society of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania in honor of the 18th century girl, Benigna, said to be the founder of the first boarding school for girls in America. Value Points: in pristine condition, the little doll wears her original costume, apron, miniature cloth bag with original folded paper telling her story, and indicating that the color blue of her hair ornament indicates that she is a "married sister".
