Description
11" (28 cm.) Carved wooden head with full cheeks, solid dome, simplistically-painted facia features, large outlined round eyes, blushed cheeks, blonde thread hair in coiled braids, muslin body with stitch-jointed limbs, wearing original costume. Along with a set of wooden dollhouse furnishing with painted floral decorations, including cupboard, table, two chairs, bed, cradle and blanket chest. Marks: Orig. Margaret Meng Puppe (doll). Comments: Germany, circa 1945. An accompanying letter recites the doll and furniture history. After WWII, the organization CARE was founded to send aid packages to survivors of WWII. One Oregon family, as part of their church's CARE outreach adopted the Weise family of war-torn Glucksburg in northern Germany. As a thank you, the Weise family sent packages back to Oregon with hand-crafted items. This doll, her additional costume, and the furniture, along with a Christmas card dated "Glucksburg, 1951 always gratefully yours" from the Weise family have been preserved intact since that time.
