Description
14" (36 cm.) Carved wooden shoulderhead with chip-carved and tinted facial features and hair, cloth body, wooden lower arms and legs, wearing original dress, apron and bonnet. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: Allanstand Cottage Industries...Asheville, N.C. (paper label which is hand-lettered on the back "Lynnwood handcarved dolls, North Carolina, �Zelma' ". Comments: circa 1930s, the Allanstand Cottage Industries was a "pioneer exchange for mountain handicraft" from 1895-1931. Value Points: rare to find original documentary label; also included are another pair of Appalachian wooden shoulderhead dolls with large carved eyes and yarn hair, original costumes (hands broken).
