Description
17" (43 cm.) All wooden doll with one-piece head and torso, ball-shaped head, hand-painted facial features, round black eyes with blue eyeshadow, single stroke brows, nostril accents, closed mouth with painted center line, blush spots on cheeks, brown yarn hair in braids, jointing at shoulders and hips, large flat-bottomed feet with painted saddle shoes. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: US Pat 140304 (painted on back) (an attached name "Estelle Wood" on underside of skirt). Comments: American, 1930s/40s, mystery maker. Lots 251, 252 and 256 have similar incongruous markings. Value Points: charming doll with original finish and wig, wearing original blue printed dress in the 1880 style with matching bonnet and reticule, undergarments; note variations in facial painting with the other three dolls.
