Description
38" (97 cm.) l. 23"h. Constructed of light wood with original painted finish, the elaborate coach, designed to copy the early steam coach that ran from Toulouse to Bordeaux to Marseille in France (hence, the Langedoc name appears on the doors and front medallion of the coach) has seats atop, 3 closed private compartments, a covered driver's seat with steering wheel and headlight, and an open high seat at the back. The invention of the steam engine in the early 19th century preceded the steam train, and important models were made in both England and France. The Langedoc line was one of the most important early systems. This model, probably late 19th or early 20th century, was designed as an architectural copy of the seat coach only. Excellent original condition. Ex-Collection Stein-am-Rhein Museum.
