18" (46 cm.) Earthenware head with portrait like features of man which are distinctively sculpted, brown side-parted hair with curls across the forehead, deeply-set eye sockets with painted blue eyes, painted brown brows, closed mouth with firmly-set lips, thick brown moustache, muslin body with earthenware hands and sculpted black shoes, wearing original blue woolen military costume with brass buttons and medals, brimmed cap. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: English, maker unknown, circa 1900, the doll portrays a particular (but unidentified) British military figure from the period of the Boer War, 1899-1902. Value Points: unique doll with well-preserved original painting, uniquely modeled hair. The figures depict Albert I king of Belgium (left) and Admiral Jellicoe (right), attributed to Lord Roberts Memorial Workshops in Fulhum, London, circa 1915.
