14" (36 cm.) Wax-over-paper-mache shoulderhead, blue glass inset eyes, painted lashes, brows and lips, closed mouth, blonde mohair wig, muslin body, paper-mache lower arms and legs, painted boots. Condition: fair, although preserved under a glass dome, the wax has typical scratches and fading. Comments: circa 1865, the doll wears a unique Stars and Stripes costume of silk satin with applique paper stars, matching cap and carries a very, very tattered American silk flag. According to oral history, the doll was presented to Georgianna and Maurice Barrymore by Mary Todd Lincoln, and it remained in the Barrymore family until its acquisition by collector Carole Jean Zvonar from whose collection it was subsequently sold in 2007. Value Points: an intriguing doll with fascinating historical connections, original costume and early tattered flag. NOT INCLUDED: Accompanying the doll is an issue of The Philadelphia Inquirer dated April 20, 1865 devoted to the assassination and funeral ceremonies of Abraham Lincoln.
