Very Rare Kewpie Emerging from a Seashell

4" (10 cm.) h. 5"w. All-bisque Kewpie is posed as though emerging from a very elaborately painted and detailed seashell, with unusual (original) torso cut to fit into the shell and with jointed bisque arms, with classic side-glancing eyes, blue wings, and topknot. The Kewpie and seashell are displayed on a wooden base with an assortment of actual miniature seashells. There is an old repair at the back of seashell, otherwise excellent. Germany, circa 1912, the theme of Kewpie emerging from various hiding places often appeared in O'Neill designs but this particular example is most intriguing and especially rare.
