Description
5" (13 cm.) l. 3"h. The head, arms and upper torso of an all-bisque Kewpie are modeled to be bursting from the side of a broken egg shell; Kewpie has sculpted parade military helmet of brown with flat red top and gilt painted medallions, painted side-glancing eyes, blue wings, and arms posed as though for balance. In another part of the egg shell his left foot is bursting through and on the opposite side of the shell the toes of his right foot protrude. Excellent condition. Germany, c. 1915, from original O'Neill designs, from the O'Neill series of Kewpies bursting from broken egg shells. Curiously, although a number of variations on the bursting-from-an-egg theme have been found, each is different in pose, animation, hat (or none), and very few have been found in other than one-of-a kind production. Each is extremely rare.
