Description
22" (56 cm.) and 25". Each has honey-toned poured wax shoulderhead, endearing plump face, blue glass inset eyes, tinted facial features, closed mouth, light brown mohair wig attached in tiny tendrils into wax, softly-stuffed muslin body, poured wax lower limbs, bare feet. Condition: very good, some fading of facial features, larger doll has repair of left leg. Comments: English, attributed to Montanari, circa 1851. Value Points: wearing wonderfully-preserved original matching costumes with ribbon and floral trim, including dresses, undergarments, bonnets and slippers. Each doll owns an undergarment with the name of original child owner or the name given to doll: "Rosa Constance" and "Alice Marion". Provenance: the dolls were gifted to Sir Morton Peto in 1851 for his two daughters, in recognition of his contribution as Engineer in construction of the Crystal Palace; the dolls remained in the Peto family until their purchase from Sir and Lady Peto of Haselmere in Sussez, England in 1987.
