Description
16" (41 cm.) Bisque socket head with oval-shaped face, blue glass sleep eyes, dark eyeliner, painted lashes, brushstroked brows, accented nostrils and eye corners, closed mouth with outlined lips and extended center line, blonde mohair waist-length wig, composition and wooden ball-jointed body, lovely antique costume and signed H.H. shoes. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 111 3. Comments: Germany, circa 1913, although the maker of the bisque head is attributed to Simon and Halbig, it remains a mystery regarding the firm which commissioned and sold the doll; possibilities include K*R whose model 111 was registered but examples marked K*R 111 have never been found, or Adolf Wizlizenus whose stylized markings exactly match the marking on this doll. Value Points: the doll remains one of the most beautiful mysteries of the doll world, with compelling expression, finest bisque and painting, original body and body finish, and original wig. The doll appears in the book, The Rose Unfolds, by Rosalie Whyel and Susan Hedrick, pages 194/195.
