Description
22" (56 cm.) Bisque socket head portraying a young boy with highly characterized angular features on oval shaped face, deeply sculpted light brown hair in boyish fashion with tousled forehead bangs, large sculpted ears, painted brown eyes, black upper eyeliner, feathered brows, strong nose with accented nostrils, closed mouth, very full shaded and outlined lips, strong definition of chin and cheek bones, composition and wooden ball-jointed body, well costumed in antique brown woolen trousers, checkered vest, shirt, tie, green woolen great coat, and brown leather boots. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: K*R 102. Comments: Kammer and Reinhardt, circa 1910. An identical sculpture, Knabenbuste, was modeled by the illustrious German artist Arthur Lewin-Funcke in 1898 and then, in 1910, was transformed by Lewin-Funcke into this rare model for Kammer and Reinhardt's art character reform series. Value Points: the extreme rarity of the model is rivaled only by the exceptional quality of its sculpting and very fine bisque and painting. The doll is featured in the book, The Rose Unfolds, by Rosalie Whyel and Susan Hedrick, pages 227/228.

Stuart's Take

While I know there are rarer Kammer and Reinhardt's, like the 105 and 106, the 102 is secretly my favorite. It's the sculpted hair. It provides for an entirely different look and was artistic genius in the portrait it presented. Interestingly, I can't imagine any other model by K*R having it with the same result. True genius. It's one of those portrait characters that people will have a hard time not staring at.
